For example, if VHS was funded by the government but then the government cut funding in 1989 and no private company continue researching video storage we wouldnt have any other means.
Today we can of course just use DVD or computers but thats only because research into video storage conitnued.
You seem to not understand that there was hardly any research into manned missions after the apollo program was shut down.
