It's 4,000 to 4,500 depending on if you measure a straight horizontal line coast to coast or a diagonal line from the farthest east and west points.

Nah, the Mercator projection is an unwrapped cylinder so curvature doesn't matter. I figured it out; the scaling of the ruler is just fucked up, you can see how in this screenshot the 500km bar is a bit closer to what it should be. Just another shit Google programmer.

The Google Earth ruler is accurate. The Google maps ruler is not from apparently using the wrong scale factor.

Sorry, apparently that feature is only on the desktop version of Google Maps. Point remains that the ruler I was complaining about has inaccurate scaling and it's unrelated to the curvature of the Earth.

Look at both images again closely, you'll notice the 500km measurement covers a different true distance in each. In the one I was talking about, the 900km one, it is impossible based on the curvature of the Earth. Here's my proof: even measuring the full diameter of a sphere, where this effect would be strongest, the surface distance is only 57% longer than the straight line distance.
