modern corporate research is interesting. I had a laboratory myself. the people in charge are glorified accountants. The engineers are frauds who are happy to go along with bullshit, because there's funding and prestige associated with it. when it eventually doesn't work its blamed on some guy, or lack of funding, or a practical issue, which is either made up or isn't acknowledged that it's actually a reason the technology is not viable.

I can't remember how many times in development or research in the very beginning I'd uncover a reason the final product wouldn't work. The response was always a half hearted acknowledgement that it was clear the hole endeavor was a fools errand and we were expected to just go through the motions.

It seems a "search engine" is just code for an educational institution LARPing as a for-profit corporation. There isn't enough competition in the search engine industry to keep search engines honest! The economists must explain, and the government must take appropriate action to enforce search engine industry spending is consistent with national security!
