I'm curious if technical analysis from trading charts also can be applied to scientific data charts.

Is there any evidence to the common trading tools like fibonacci retracements and fractal formations being able to predict epidemiological/historical/cellular response/drug efficacy etc?

The reason why TA works in trading chart is not because of any superficial beliefs.

It's because all traders, especially bots, use the same tools to target limit sell/buy orders. So if enough people uses the fibonacci tools to target $100, then the demand will go to $100.

And even without the supply volume distribution, there is some validity to chart formations that resemble fractals from nature and the common mathematic golden ratio numbers.

There's some degree of artificial randomness from conflicting speculations that results in the price volatility. Hence the reason why markets are unpredictable short-mid term, only somewhat predictable on a long term chart after a chart formation has taken.

Thereby the volatility index could be seen as a random factor.

high frequency or quant trading involves numerous indicator value inputs for bots to target trades that individual speculators can't process without an algorithm, but even then the artificial randomness can throw off any bots to unprecedented loss of trade.

Randomness is a whole different topic but if each trader has a guess from 1~100, and there are 1 million traders, then the combined factor is near impossible to algorithmically parse that the artificial randomness becomes indistinguishable from true randomness.

I've messed around with charting tools and TA logic for study data and even COVID19 rate charts, and some just really align, especially to fibonnaci retracement levels.

But your not predicting 1 million traders. Each trader’s impact on the way the market moves is weighted by the amount of capital they deploy in active trades. Given that wealth is distributed in a Pareto fashion it would follow that there are only a handful of traders/institutions that really move the market on any given timeframe. So you really only have to detect the behaviour of a handful not the aggregate behaviour of 1 million.

Whereas 1 million traders behaviour would trend towards the mean (almost random), the statistical deviation of behaviour among only a handful of traders means that there are lots of anomalies which can be exploited.

Anyway, I think we agree on the same point but we just reached it in different ways - the market is definitely not random.

Symmetries, geometries, and fractals are found everywhere to the degree that it's doesn't seem random at all.

Counterargument would be that we humans tend to look for patterns so we notice more of it, but I think pure randomness is harder to achieve or find than we expect.

Like SHA-256 is artificial randomness or encryption but so random that current computational power can't parse.

So I think artificial and natural randomness aren't so different, since both derive from cascading effects that we expect from human perspective.

Like the bell curve and exponential chart is just so applicable to all kinds of things in nature and mankind.

Anyways I am gonna try applying TA logic tools to the COVID19 surge graph since the infection rate has been increasing.

I know it sounds like bullshit but fractal formations and fibonacci retracements really does seem to be applicable to scientific data chart prediction

That's a string of buzzwords you heard other people describe the stock market as.

The stock market, like any market, is controlled by the principles of supply and demand. There are more specific, technical aspects of what moves price up and down but literally just applying the concept of supply and demand to a chart, you start getting technical analysis "patterns" like ascending and descending triangles.

I actually agree with others that most TA tools are without any merit, even as coming from an avid trader.

But fibonacci ratio and fractals are somewhat fundamentals to physics and the universe.

Nothing is truly random. If it looks random or not depends on what you know about the system and its inputs. When it comes to stocks, no one who has been in the market for a prolonged time is fully confident in his fundamental thesis and will therefore always look at the chart for anchor points and that's the only reason why things like support and resistance work sometimes. i dont remember the exact content of the post but somebody on sci or biz used to work for renaissance technologies and he said TA was bullshit and that they just used proprietary data streams, i.e. actually useful data for making predictions, like if they are trading commodity futures obviously special and niche weather data would be more important than some meme bullshit ML or TA. also 'algorithmic trading' is mostly frontrunning , arbitrage, these are all exploiting market inefficiencies NOT trying to pull a rabbit out of a hat

"TA works" is a meaningless statement and clearly demonstrats you arent a trader.

There is no binary works or doesn't work in trading. What matters is sharpe ratio etc. If a TA guy can show me a good sharpe ratio I'll pay attention, but there's probably a reason why they never show you any objective measures.

Most TA traders are simply fooled by beta. Every TA trader I know, and I know quite a few who are trading portfolios in the size of millions $, have privately admitted to me that they would have done just as well, if not surpassed their earnings by simple buy and hold. Just being profitable is not enough, you need to factor in the added risk you are taking on by engaging in a TA strategy.

All that matters is results in trading, I don't give a fuck about the Fibonacci fractals and bullshit.

Market inefficiencies is another bullshit term. It really is worse than TA because it stems from a more fundamental misunderstanding. If TA is astrology charts, market inefficiencies is haruspicy.
TA is a forgivable sin. People see endless evidence of confirmation bias, reinforcement cycles bolster support of it in books and on the web, it accidentally has things that are statistically relevant and not TA at all like linear regression and moving averages. Efficient markets is the goblet of spunk from the clergy circle jerk and still every dumb fucker gets their share at communion

Certain tools that are using mathematical ratios and historical data prediction modelling is very much the same as to prediction algorithms used for science data.

I mean the weather report itself is sort of a visual TA, with various factors like humidity and cloud movement as indicators. Many still say weather report is bullshit, but often it is accurate enough.

Just supply and demand zones. Basically where price accelerates quickly in either direction. When this happens, there are orders that are not filled due to fast price action (limit orders) which are still valid from big institutions. Once price reaches these zones again, those orders get filled and it drives prices in the opposite direction of the zone. If you can identify these zones it’s free money most of the time. I only use VWAP and these zones which are hand drawn with tools available by your broker. Everything else is just unnecessary noise and clutters up my charts. I initially tried to trade with a bunch of indicators, but it just overcomplicates things and you suffer from analysis paralysis.
