The few DIY tests I've seen have yielded ok results but those were amateurs with improvised home equipment. Transparent wood not only would be a good replacement for window glass in terms of strength and insulation but would also open up many new possibilities in lighting in general.
But it has to scale at a reasonable cost, which remains to be seen if it is possible. Even if it turns out that transparent wood isn't possible at scale but translucent is, it would reduce the need for window glass used for lighting purposes rather than view purposes.
