Is there any way to get involved in science now that I've graduated? I'm willing to do things for free. Even when I was a student I couldn't volunteer with a professor because they only wanted students that got undergraduate grants/awards. You'd think scientists would welcome free labor.

Our time is far more valuable than the money we pay for students' stipends. A Professor's time is worth even more. Conversely your time is also valuable; you're very unlikely to find a good adviser that will help you break into a respected STEM field so you would most likely be wasting your precious lifespan working under whoever takes you with nothing to show for it.

If you want to get into GOOD, WORTHWHILE research working with decent professors then the best (and probably only) way of breaking in is by offering huge private grants to a research group/department that would also fund other PhDs, equipment etc. is hard to refuse. Even the worst Prof. on the planet will instinctively spam report an e-mail saying "I work hard and for free", but they might keep reading if you bring money with your research proposal.

You're not. If you work in STEM and develop a patent, even a stupid one that at least makes money, you can build a fortune off that and get into research with it. Academia is not the only place where innovation happens, it is just a pool of public funds for helping it.

A know of engineers and mathematicians who have switched between industry and academia more than once in their careers. Just be good at what you do and success will come.

I just got my first non-academia internship! I’m entering my final year and thus far only have work experience in academic labs. I applied to do a paid internship at the only biotech company in my city, and I got the position :)

How does one get better at this stuff? All these textbooks all feel like they have scattered, incomplete information. Am I not reading the right stuff or am I retarded?

Also, where do I find good sources for lasers? I'm making an open Raman system and have to align lasers and I have zero fucking clue about the actual physics of this shit outside the basics. I barely just finally understood what the fuck a photon REALLY is.

Turn off your phone. Do your homework immediately and study regularly. Go to office hours when you're having problems with the homework. As far as improving your job prospects, get internships over the summer or look for things that are advertised like undergraduate research etc. that you can put on your CV.

At what point do you realize that a math major isn't for you? I’ve taken both discrete and Matrix/linear and reading over proofs never excited me. Or I’ll just think “cool” and move on. Maybe it’s because both classes were more computational, maybe it was the way they were taught, but I always want to skip over proofs and just learn the process. Is that a red flag?

I wanted to do math primarily because I think it would give me the most options (SWE, finance, grad school, etc). Should I just say fuck it and do something else? EE with a CS minor possibly?

DLIF is fluorescence, and the fluorescence vs Raman differences are explained as:

"Fluorescence occurs due to real electronic transitions. On the other hand, Raman scattering occurs as a result of virtual electronic-vibrational transitions . More generally, we can say that fluorescence is an absorption or re-emission process and Raman scattering is an inelastic scattering process."

If I remember correctly, Raman doesnt technically absorb the photon and re-emit it, it's a "virtual state" that happens simultaneously, where as fluorescence is a 2 step process.

The interview itself was simple. I had prepared for an intense technical interview but the actual interview was pretty informal. We just chatted about about the position, my current honours project, and my availability during the Fall semester. It only took like 15 minutes.
My cover letter and resumè pretty much did all of the work for me! In any case, I appreciate your advice!

Hard work and some luck. I had to do 7 years of seasonal work before I got a permanent job which is fairly common in the ecology and land management fields. I was managing my own programs at a national park as a seasonal and got to work with the Washington DC office to create a training program for integrating pest management, historic preservation, and public health. Now I look at wildlife activity at airports and try to devise ways to mitigate strikes. Since the USDA operates wherever the DOD operates, I can travel the world and work in my field. It's a pretty cool gig.

Industrial is pretty comfy, it is a broad range of topics, but thats why I like it because its well rounded. It also has 10% growth of the next 10 years, and theres lots of jobs

I've found the people quite welcoming and happy. The country is absolutely beautiful too. The only place that seemed cold was Tokyo, but I didn't get a chance to explore there much so maybe it was just the day crowd trying to get through the work week. I found that if you speak a little Japanese they tend to drop their formal attitude and open up a bit.

Having industrial experience is the most important thing. I did a year long placement at a biotech company, which is the primary reason I got offered a job at a big pharma company.

Also be able to demonstrate that your skills are valuable in industry. In my experience, the skills academia wants are pretty much identical to what private companies want. They just want competent, experienced people who know what they're doing.

I agree, the best form of learning is by doing, but most of the practical learning opportunities I have come across have already been in an area I am somewhat familiar with - I had an 'in' on the problem. An example of this would be a project where I was the only person who vaguely had an idea about where to start, or the problem was slightly related to my area of study, so the project was given to me. I could then build on this, but I had to have the background to begin with. How do you get the opportunity to tackle such a wide range of problems? And how do you even approach them if they are all so different?

I wrote this argument on my understanding of happiness and optimism. Happiness comes from a perceived change in your life for the better. If you don't feel change for the better, you will not feel happiness. Even if your life is good and doesn't change for the worse. This will only produce contentment at best.

And why would you want to do that. You're telling people to become conflict shy doormats, more or less. The thing is that your approach is idealistic and often doesn't produce results. There are few conflicts that arise through words which can be resolved through words. Instead, this creates needless conflict and no resolution. That's my experience with these things.

There's a time and place for everything. Myself, I write arguments online anonymously in order to save face with real humans who I must maintain good social standing with in order to provide for myself. Many of my arguments would upset people, and there's no reason to bring them up knowing that words have little power other than to anger people.

You are incredibly idealistic and I would consider this to be a delusion if you think that words and protest amount to anything meaningful. The only things "built" upon indignation and anger from people have generally turned into shitshows. The people who protest are the dregs of society because they lack the good nature and work ethic necessary to become happy, content, and successful in society. The point is that if you can't change something, then you should not be upset about it. Most things in the world cannot be changed. The people who spend all day being upset because they're 5'6" men wallow in their own misery rather than accept the fact, move on, and try to improve their lives. This is very problematic when they are demanding unattainable things. Look at BLM and black equality, look at transgenders demanding to be women. These are very unattainable things, with the black race likely being unable to overpower the geneitc predispositions which lead them unto folly, while the transgenders will never be women.

People become upset, demand a "better tomorrow", and spend their entire lives angry, "feeling oppressed", and voluntarily putting themselves in the position of the victim, and nowadays it's gotten to the point where people have demands which are physically impossible to meet. Despite having demands which cannot be met, these people put themselves in the position of the victim and psychologically suffer until their demands are met. Clearly their demands cannot be met, and they suffer in this position until they die. It's very sadistic to teach people that "Those with unreasonable demands should be respected", because those people with unreasonable demands will always be the least happy, most angry, and generally most problematic in society. These people are a menace to society, but it is the tolerance of this behavior which leads so many people to be tempted down this path of delusional and unattainable demands.

This is a key for self-esteem. You will always suffer if you think people are better than you. The key in finding something to hate is to ensure you don't wallow in the "I'm worthless, I'm worse than everyone, and there's no hope for me." which is common among the depressive types of people.

Hatred here, it says "hate like a God", see them as your rival. This sort of hatred. It's a way to ensure that you are constantly competing, constantly trying to improve, rather than accepting things and becoming contented by them. Especially yourself.

If you become contented with yourself, you may likely stop wanting to improve. When you stop trying to improve, you can no longer experience happiness but only contentment and dissatisfaction with yourself if you fail to meet your own expectations. It's improvement from baseline which we feel happiness, including the improvement of the self.

Hatred, here, is essential because when you don't hate something you are tempted by it and you want it. Wanting things leads to envy, and envy leads to sorrow. Hatred can be used as fuel to improve yourself and avenge yourself, where envy is much less powerful of a motivator for most people.

When you think about sports teams trying to beat their rival, they really are aggressive towards them. They aren't just sitting there envying those people. When you envy, rather than hate, you are now accepting the supremacy of the person you envy. This is bad for motivation, because when you hate them, you want to be able to prove that you're better than them, and this challenges you to improve yourself until you can be the living testament of this fact.

Envy tempts you to accept the fact that the other person is better than you, and it can cause you to suffer without the motivation to actually compete and supersede them. When you have suffering without the ability to resolve the suffering, this is bad. Hate helps you avoid that position.

The hatred part is also largely directed at consumer goods. Most people will need a strong mechanism to help them avoid consuming these goods because they source a lot of pleasure from those goods. This is why hating those goods is such an essential strategy, because if you hate it, you are much less likely to be tempted by it.

Thinking "I want that candy, but I shouldn't have it", is much less convincing than thinking "I hate that candy, it is a waste of money, it will lead to nothing but suffering, and I hate the people who consume it for succumbing to temptation and allowing the powers that be to perpetuate folly".

The hatred here is more powerful than just "knowing better". The number of people on a diet that will go "slip up" and have a treat is very high because they want it. The number of homophobic White racists that will "slip up" and have gay sex with a black man is very, very low. That's the power of hatred, in that it allows you to much more reliably avoid the things which you are attempting to avoid in order to lower your baseline.

That's the key takeaway here. It's not "hate everything", as much as "hate militantly with good reason". I love many things in the world, I love myself, but I hate many facets of the human species with a considerable amount of fury.

You don't need to be consumed by hatred, but it's just whenever you see that thing, you feel the appropriate hatred. When I drive past any fast food restaurant, I hate the restaurant. When I see wasteful or decadent products at the store, I hate them. I avoid these wasteful expenses so reliably because i hate them to the point where I am unable to even consider wanting them or being tempted by them. Hatred is very reliable and easily developed, that's the point.

This article was written in good faith and trying to help people. It was targeted at socially maladaptive and depressive people, but any people who suffer from indignation

Everyone I know who did computational stuff either transitioned to more general programming/data science type roles or they went into academia. I fairly regularly search the local job boards to keep up to date and I have not seen a single computational chemistry job come up in 3+ years. Plenty for bioinformatics though.

Similar for systems engineers in my experience. Although I suppose you could say communication is a skill and systems engineers should be good at that otherwise everyone starts working in their own silo and not cooperating on the wider project.

Which country? In Australia honours exists as the optional 4th year of research for those who want to go on to a PhD/research masters. Without it it's borderline impossible to get straight into a PhD.
From what I understand it's basically meaningless in the rest of the world though. My uni even stopped their honours program with their reason being that it doesn't fit the global system and students would be better going straight into a partial coursework (50% + 50% research) masters instead of wasting time on the honours (though I still think they were motivated by the masters being 2 years and honours only 1 so they would get extra money by shifting everyone to a masters).

I worked in a research lab for a couple years which let me apply directly to a research masters (which I could transfer to a PhD) so it was alright.
From what I understand I could have done an honours straight after instead but at that point I was pretty put off by the Judaism of academia and decided to get work instead.

In Canada honours programs are fairly important for graduate school applications. There is a grade cut off around 80% in each of your discipline courses (i.e. if you’re a Chem student, to join honours you must have an > an 80% average in your Chem courses). You apply for honours at the end of your 3rd year and contact a professor who wishes to supervise the honours thesis in their lab. I am in eastern CT, I would take any GS job which maintains my current standard or living. Im a chemistry major who is mastering out of a PhD program. I am trying to decide:

I've never done any 'higher level' biology, if that means anything, but am very interested in the research and have a good set of lab skills.

Physics has some labs that are close to my experience (nanomaterials) but I'm afraid my math transcript might kill me, I had a really rough undergrad and my math courses range from C to A (4 different courses), with a withdrawal in both diff eq and Calc III (which wouldve completed my math minor), BUT I do have a B in Quantum Physical Chemistry (I forget the official course name).

Materials Science I have very limited experience outside of inorganic and nanomaterials.

None of these are guaranteed, but so far the profs I've met with and discussed have been pleasantly surprised at my skillset and experience.

If anyone has experience in these fields and can offer some advice as to what each of these options entail, I'd be glad to hear them, even if they're outside these few options.

one colleague im working with now was a music bachelors and masters, and at 38 years old or so just graduated with PhD in chem.

Going to physics isn't too farfetched it seems after seeing those.

As for bio, I'm interested in some environmental work, possibly for the government, or just continue in academia if I like it enough to continue. But I also have zero experience in the real world, i've been a perpetual stoodier, so I'm not entirely sure what is out there, which is why I post a lot here.

Going to university this september. I'm in the UK so I can't major in 2 subjects or minor in 2, I have to choose 1 subject and just study that.
Should I study Mathematics or Physics? I'd ideally like to become an astronaut when I'm older but obviously that's a pipe dream. I'd like to earn lots of money but also something I enjoy (I love science in a research capacity).
Mathematics also gives me the opportunity to study abroad for a year in countries like China, korea, Singapore, USA which really appeals to me.

How different will my options be depending on which course I take? My current plan is to take mathematics so I can do a year abroad, and then get a job in either finance or computer science to make some big bucks. Save and invest and later down the line in my 40s I can move into something more scientific e.g. get a PHD and do scientific research in maths or Physics. Is this plan retarded/pheasable? Please advise me anons, 19 year old here wanting to set myself up well for life.

You could definitely go into bio with nanomaterials experience. We have a biology nanomaterials group at my uni.
Materials science is where the jobs here are. Even the straight chemists often end up going into materials science type work.

Your spectra experience definitely fits with what the materials scientist at my work does.

What's your plan though? Work or research? Personally I would find biotech research more interesting but if I just wanted steady employment I would likely go for materials science (though this depends a lot on the area some places are full of biotech opportunities).

Just graduated ME 2.71 gpa from pretty meh state university (~40's ranking on usnews) no internships bc really shit gpa until last year. But these types of programs in general in my experience are different between each program even within the same uni. Some workplaces are better off doing all the placement consecutively and some are better alternating.

My company is still pretty small so we only have the direct manager -> CTO -> CEO but I'm wondering what other opportunities exist for management positions in science. It's been put to me that the only room for advancement besides waiting 40 years to become chief chemist and still earn less than is to become a manager. I've seen what personnel managers do though, constant meetings, working and slides and boring busywork like that. I wouldn't mind being a manager/lead/CI for a lab/project though. Is that even a common thing in industry or does it usually just have the director/program manager overlooking everything?

Yes, computational science is often needed in physics research. https://www.epfl.ch/education/master/programs/computational-science-and-engineering/ (EPFL has a nice website but it is also offered at other universities).
There is also quantum computing but you probably need a PhD for that.

Principal scientist is probably the job title you're looking for at larger companies with more structure, often PhD level coming in as scientist and then moving through a few levels (1-3, then senior scientist, or some industry postdoc then senior scientist etc), or poached to that level from academia. That's basically running the lab and as far as you can rise without leaving direct scientific work, above that there's managing with more business considerations than just what the science says

Best thing to do is automate whatever your job is so you have freetime to find yourself and work on other credentials, develop a side hustle. There might be some negotiation room in a smaller company, but your whole class is considered replaceable with anyone else of it. Get some work experience. It's way more important than grades and the university you attended. Do anything you can to get any kind of work or volunteering in that field. Convince them that you love animals and it's the field you want to work in in the future.

I'll just copy and paste my question from the general stupid questions thread into here, since no one answered it:

Anyone have any good recommendations on R programming language tutorials regarding data-analytics? Especially interested, if it's medical research related.

I'm currently trying to switch away from SPSS to R and I'm in the middle of a doctoral thesis research project.

A side note: I have not little prior experience with C++ and Python, although with C++ I only learned the very VERY basics and with Python I learned the basics and some useful skills (that I've already forgotten). R seems to be THE tool for statistical analysis and I've grown so tired of SPSS, so decided to give it a go.

I've learned the basics of R and I'm currently learning about data visualization, but I'm running out of good material, videos and so on. But at least I've got my own patient data that I can play with; it has 300 variables for 600 patients and the variables come in all the classes there are pretty much.

Why do they value PhDs so much? Is it just degree inflation, the same way that lower level jobs are required to have a bachelor's now when they weren't 10+ years ago? Do they just use a PhD as a proxy selection filter for desirable traits? Or is there real value in PhDs that a master's alone doesn't provide?.

I'm really only doing a PhD because it's pretty much required in industry. Everyone there I spoke to at my biotech internship had a PhD and told me I should get one if I want to work in industry after I graduate. Like a car with only 3 wheels, yeah it's still a car technically, but it would just be way better if it had 4 wheels. UK btw, idk what it's like elsewhere.

It's not fair, lads. Don't get me wrong, I like being with patients and I like the clinical work, but research just brings way more meaning to my life. I even prefer clinical research, so I'm working with patients there too. And if the gap in wage was a little smaller, it wouldn't be a problem, but yeah, ~2500 € / month vs. upwards from 12 000 € / month (with around 50 % income tax, but still).

Second, take a deep breath and chill the fuck out. Seriously do not stress because you are about to begin a really cool part of your life.

I would not get hung up on getting a GS job, they are actually pretty low paying compared to their corporate counterparts. If you do the math, the pension is almost a wash in terms of overall financial benefit compared to just investing the extra money you’d be making in the corporate world. More importantly, that GS job is always going to be there man, you can cop one at just about any time. Also if you really are dead set on a GS job you aren’t likely to get a 12 or 13 right out the gate, your most likely going to get a 9-11. It’s also not too important which GS job you get because once you’re in, you’re in and it’s super easy to go get a different GS position once your foots in the door. GS positions can also take a looooong time to get into, I was getting phone calls to interview for positions I had applied to almost a year prior. That being said, there are some really fucking cool jobs available if you are a single guy and patient.

Next, and this is going to suck to hear, nobody gives a flying fuck who you were or what you did in the military. Especially as an enlisted guy. It doesn’t matter if you built nuclear reactors with your bare hands, your service is going to be viewed as a glorified internship. In fact, an actual internship will carry more weight on your resume. You are going to realize once you get out how lazy and unproductive most civilians are and how very different they operate. That go-go-go mentality that the military instills in you is actually going to have to get turned down. Took me almost 2 years to work the Navy out of my system.

Physicians aren't doctors by default here, instead physicians are "licentiates of medicine" and need to do an actual doctoral thesis to gain the doctor's title. I'm currently doing a big research project that also acts as my doctoral thesis project. But I guess I'll just get back to clinical work when I'm done and start doing research as a side thing.

If you want to do SWE you should do SWE, if you want to do finance you should do finance. Math absolutely does not allow you to transition to other fields like Profs tell you it does, it is extremely different to make your case for it. The only people that can easily make the switch are PhDs in applied fields who get lucky in solving a problem specifically required by a company. A bachelors in math basically allows you to apply for a PhD in math. If you don't think you can do gradschool and excell then don't try it.

I graduated in Accounting and Finance almost 2 years ago now and I heavily regret choosing that soul-sucking career path.
I want to do a career 180 and pursue a scientific field. The problem is, where I live (UK) I can't get a loan on a second undergraduate degree, so my only option is postgrad stuff.
I was looking at Computer Science MSc, but I think they expect you to have some prior knowledge.
The uni that I went to offer a cheaper one year postgrad course which is a "Graduate Diploma in Computing", kind of like a meme masters for computing but entry-level, and I could then do a full MSc the following year.
What do you guys think of this?
Also for anyone involved in CS, what are your main regrets/good choices and what is it like entering the field as a beginner?
Btw the course I'm looking at starts in Jan 2022 so I have a good few months to brush up on concepts/skills that I might need

I would not recommend CS. Competition is huge and you will start off with an age disadvantage. Software is really immature, they want you at the age of 25 with 10 years experience and then kick you out before you are 40, preferably before 35. After that you are "too old" and would have been expected to transition into management anyway. I am not sure you would want to hop into that meat grinder. I left it when my last job imploded and other companies in the field found 35+ to be too old.

Why not transition into management consultancies, where you can work in teams with people also from STEM backgrounds? That way you can play from your advantages and still get interesting work.

Going deeper into finance is still an option for me. I have also been looking at Fintech but to be honest they generally require you to have a reasonable understanding of CS.
Business analytics is a field I could delve into.

Going with embedded systems over webdev stuff. Ecosystems from hardware vendors is messy but its very fun to work with hardware and learning how to write robust real-time software.

I'm quite fond of XeLaTeX+mklatex myself, but from what I know implementations don't differ much from an end-user perspective. I recommend playing around with tikz and related packages. Being able to draw consice figures is a huge boon, and knowing some tikz allows you to draft some quickly. LaTeX package docs are pretty comfy to read.

my previous abusive PI and my current absent PI told me I can use them as references. They said if they get called up, they'll just say the usual "smart, hard worker, got his masters" and leave it at that.
Unless they're truly evil, the only things they want for you is to

>2. succeed, grad school was life to these profs and they're just wanting you to succeed in it too.

Not sure it's that so much as everyone else is either too busy or sufficiently checked out that they don't care until it's too late.
Either way I'm too much of a fuckup to be trusted with decisions that have cost impacts 3-4x my salary. It's crazy when you think about CEOs, bankers, etc. who deal with millions of dollars at a time (and often lose it) and don't seem to be fazed by it at all. I would be a basket case.
It doesn't help that I'm busy enough to work late nights and weekends and still have to prioritize work to the extent that I can't spend enough time working through solutions.

I would imagine CS and neuroscience. Combining CS with biomed sciences is great. In the future can choose to only utilize CS as a ‘regular’ CS graduate, or you can be a great biomed graduate.

Both are elite. Recruitment for both can be pretty arbitrary honestly.

If you apply to any of the schools in the top 10 from QuantNet' s rankings, you'll have a decent chance anywhere. I will say though that Baruch is consistently ranked high for some reason, but it probably won't get you much if you ever decide to leave finance or NY. Also, even within schools, like Columbia and NYU, they have separate MFE and MathFin programs that have totally different application processes but will get you the same jobs. So something to consider.

My boss (manager) said that he can't directly hire me into the company because of regulations and all of that but I can apply to this leadership development program which is open to both external and internal recent college graduates and is generally aimed at interns who knows the ins-and-outs of the company.

The thing is, I have zero leadership skills. My previous job interview was so bad that the interviewer said that I can talk about leadership in games and jesus christ I had no answer for that either.

For reference, I'm an undergrad who got a long-term internship at a company that I genuinely want to work in for the rest of my life so I don't want to fuck it up. I have like 10 months left and I've so far just been doing the baby stuff like throwing stuff into excel and all that.

This is a lot more important than I thought. Im the chemistry anon spamming shit in this thread. You dont have to know the jargon, but in my labs I personally only worked with certain instrumentation like NMR, UV-VIS, and Raman. By becoming friends, my colleagues are taking some time out of their day teaching me GC-MS, HPLC, and also letting me know if their other friends have landed jobs yet so I can get a foot in the door to those places. I would never get those opportunities by myself.

Godspeed, anon. Get out of your comfort zone. Trust me, it sucks, it hurts, but youll be better off doing so. Just dont burn yourself out and keep a learning mindset, especially since this is what you REALLY want to do.

the work has a reputation of being boring but in reality it is not. You get to work with a lot of different kinds of people and the career path is good. Staying in tech will normally not be a good career after you turn 40. Being a patent attorney you get to be in both tech and management.

I am not in the US but I have worked with Qualcomm people in the past.
