I've been a software engineer for 8 years so I'm not so inclined in mechanical engineering. I was thinking about the design of an internal combustion engine though and was wondering, is it possible for a piston rod to have a piston at each end? Terrible ms paint drawing related. I've tried googling and couldn't find anything

Interesting... This additionally goes to 2 pistons per cylinder. I think it's mechanically equivalent with the addition of the additional piston per cylinder. Time will tell if it's useful technology but I'm a bit more curious

A lot of these fancy engine designs dont have fundamental differences with normal engines but having less parts reduces the friction and vibrations. Theres a motor out there with a single piston and no crankshaft, instead it pushes a rod into an electric linear generator, also reputed to be very efficient. They just get closer to their ideal limits.

Precisely, you should be able to use that momentum to compress the opposing piston. Seems like some of these super modern designs effectively accomplish this

Technically I think this would be a V-twin. Most V engines have 2 pistons mounted to the same crank pin. The reason you don't see them flat like your picture is it's impossible to balance the forces and the whole engine ends up shaking.

Yes, it’s a flat engine, also known as a boxer engine. It’s used in basically every Subaru and Porsche. Although, having them both attached to one crankpin would just unbalance it and remove one of the main benefits of this type of engine, you’d then have to add a counterweight to the crankshaft.

That's the whole point, that makes it a V engine with a V angle of 180 degrees. You can't just ignore information you don't like.

A single piston and chamber is all that is necessary for an internal combustion engine in the general case. Additional pistons are usually a matter of increasing power output and smoothing out the torque on the crankshaft over the course of the rotational period. They need not be inline, and they could even be askew with an appropriate transmission design at the loss of efficiency. Your drawing, though crude, is possible and has already been utilized in the field.
