Why do human fingernails grow so long. What is the evolutionary benefit and what is the optimal length? It seems like there's no need for them to grow one millimeters past the finger but they grow way longer than that. What is the evolutionary way to cut them?

Back in the bad old days, chimpanzees used to get little splinters under their skin every time they tried to sand a 2x4. We humans have begun to evolve past that in our own way. Now all we need is a way to get the splinters out from under our fingernails.

Having slightly longer nails helps for digging out dingle berries from our anuses. Then after a fresh digging, you can chew the nails down.

It's because you were supposed to use them a lot so evolution 'came up' with this mechanism of constant growth, mice have teeth that works the same way as our nails, you can imagine why that would be useful to them

Hair has a maximum length. Most people don't grow it out to that length though.

according to google its 3 meter. lol. seems very impractical. humans needed to be able to cut there hair before it started to grow that long.

I think most animals do actually they constant hair growth, they just periodically go through cycles where they shed it in large amounts and regrow it. Consider that hairless dogs and warthogs often have long hair in what little hair they have.

Hair is about holding infants. If they are falling from your chest they can just grab your long hair and you become aware of it. Also that's why men sometimes lose it, since they a lot of times are not the one carrying the children.
