How to minimise thinking fatigue?

Studying, working on difficult problems (difficult for me), or doing some sort of mentally creative work, tires me out.
My brain can function optimally for roughly 40 minutes, but then the diminishing returns kick in, and I need to take a long break, before I can perform at the same level.
Do you have any tips to minimise this?
