There has to be some middle ground between inventors getting paid nothing and having a small class of billionaires running around, most of whom got rich not by inventing, but by figuring out a series of technically legal scams to defraud others.
Regrettably, we don't know who most of the real difference-makers of the last century were. There is no record of who invented, for instance, GPS. Dozens of people have been recognized for helping with one piece of it or another, I've even seen a show where they somehow tried to attribute the entire thing, in full, to a black woman, just because it was black history month.
All we know is that "DARPA" did it, but the people who work/worked there have names, and the idea of measuring time-of-flight differentials between different satellites for radio signals from a point source on the ground is an idea that must have popped into one particular person's head. The engineering stuff, the math portions, yes, that was a team effort, but the guy who was sitting at his kitchen table and said, "Eureka!", that guy may never have received any credit.
