Since I don't believe he would side with religion or something like that, I'll assume he's referring to things that cannot be perceived by our senses.
Tesla did not agree with Einstein's relativity. He firmly believed that speed of light is not the greatest speed an electromagnetic wave can achieve. And in a way, we can only notice and measure the consequences of electromagnetism. Same thing goes for energy.
Perhaps he wanted to point out that we should study them as they are, rather than driving conclusions about them through consequences they leave on physical entities?
