23&me have three or four successive opt-ins for storing various levels of data. You have to consent to each one. Something like this if I remember correctly:
>store the basic datamandatory or no point to it otherwise
>keep the sample for future sequencingmaybe they'll do a full sequence in the future without having to send a sample in
>include your data in statistics generated by 23&me and then shared with third partiesthird parties won't get your name or sequence
>allow your data (name stripped) to be shared directly with third partiesdata is anonymized but they get the sequence
Your sequence isn't really much use to "them" on its own unless it's shared with insurance companies. They won't do that behind your back, and if they do you could sue the fuck out of them.
You can also download your data and upload it anonymously to third party services that provide more information than 23&me. For example I learned I'm 4x more likely to die of a brain anyeurism than average.
