the surviving axons become thicker to compensate as per the image but no they become relatively sparse. that pic is from rats i believe but there was a study in primates that showed roughly the same thing (pic related).

which is being studies still or was completed. i fail to understand how to use clinicaltrials.gov and wish they'd put a link to the completed study if it was completed
