Imagine some kind of dock/station for starships that has a bunch of (preferably inflatable) habs to share between them.
You would have your private bunk on a starship, but things like 0g gyms, bathrooms, mess, etc. could be shared. And as somebody who lived for 2 years above a gym, you want to have some sort of space between the noisy public rooms and crew cabins where people want to sleep.
Another benefit is that you don't need to bring all this crap designed for 0g to Mars/Earth and back up, wasting payload and you can be mounting all that stuff on ceiling and walls for more space utilisation
You can also have extra life support systems and energy in case one of the ships has a critical malfunction, which would otherwise be a complete disaster that could be the end to the whole operation.
Having some kind of massive ion thruster bank that would further save on the number of tanker flights required each time as well.
The more I think about it, the more sense it makes.
