The endgoal would be either startrek like planetary colonization, or the more dark version, that we are slowly replacing life with machines. There is actually not that much difference between computers and organic life. I think the only thing that makes life distinguishable from a stone is its ability to store and process information and influence the future. Basically life is capable of perceiving and using time. A stone cannot. A computer can perceive time. Thus you could say a computer is as alive as any organic beeing.
