Intermittent fasting has been shown to be no more or less effective at weight loss than calorie counting. However, a lot of people find intermittent fasting easier because they tend to get bigger meals that way. However, a lot of people think you can just eat like shit and lose weight with intermittent fasting. That may be true if you're already a fat fuck, but otherwise you're just sabotaging yourself.
Other health markers do tend to improve when regularly fasting, though. Insulin resistance decreases. Bad cholesterol decreases.
I highly recommend Jason Fung's books on the topic. Lots of great stuff. Brad Pilon's Eat Stop Eat is also a great book on intermittent fasting (one of the first to really deep dive on the topic).
Is it worth it: In my opinion, yes. But you still have to semi-watch what you eat. Don't expect to lose weight if you have a bunch of twinkies and sodas in a day.
