Pic unrelated.
When I hold a broomstick by it's center of mass and hold it diagonally, there is no rotor - all forces (gravitation and my hand's norm) are acting on the center of mass. Yet if I hold it loosely it will seek to rotate and act a bit like a pendulum till it settles vertically.
What gives? How is it rotating? I feel like a dumdum.
