Why aren't more smart people going into materials science?

I recently did a huge survey on technology and where we can move forward and what's holding us up. Across nearly every field, the problems seem to always seem to come back to materials science. Aerospace, energy, computing etc.

We already know how to build some amazing sci-fi futuristic shit, but we just don't have the materials to actually construct it.

So why aren't more people working on this stuff?
