Yeah, math books are usually a little condescending. This is an invitation to apply a little analysis / common sense to get from point to the next, except depending on the author, it can involve a pretty rare sense and a lot of analysis.

Basically, try to understand how they reached that conclusion, and if you can't, well, it might as well say, "git gud, scrub."

It is almost always a mix of honesty and naive optimism.
It will be true that if the student seriously thinks about the statement, then
they realize that is basically obvious. However, in real life the student will
have no intention to seriously think about stuff that is as boring as the topic
which they are supposed to be studying.

Sometimes the authors could just write "I know I'm better than you" instead of hiding the sentiment in the remarks they make.
