Is it really the horror that certain natural foods advocates suggest?

Or is that all just tinfoil hat fearmongering?

Are the claims about the use of Roundup as a wheat desiccant legitimate? Or just an urban legend?

I've no clue about the toxicity other than what you can find on wikipedia. But even if it was slightly toxic to environment/humans it could still be useful as replacement of plowing, and better for the environment overall

My chemical intuition tells me that phosphate is going to interact with a ton of stuff in your body. Probably will cause problems.

As far as herbicides go it's one of the safer ones. It is decomposed by soil bacteria and generally not very mobile. It also is has less acute toxicity to animals than a lot of other herbicides.

Now for long-term toxicity or carcinogenic properties a lot of stuff is still up for debate. Really I'm under the impression that the fight against glyphosate is really a fight against genetically modified glyphosate resistant plants and modern industrialized agriculture in general. Bayer probably wouldn't give a fuck if the stuff gets outlawed, the patent is gone and Chinese companies produce it by the ton.

It’s one of the mildest herbicides, you could drink it and be fine. Very low acute toxicity.

Chronic exposure? Hard to say but whatever they replace it with would likely be worse

Shit 100% causes cancer. It's also so widely used that all produce (even produce farmed without roundup) becomes contaminated by roundup.

Also fun fact. The Bayer acquisition of Monsanto was driven partially by the fact that Bayer couldn't figure out plant engineering. They figured it would be easier to just buy a company that could do it. Then they got stuck holding the bag on the roundup lawsuits. Hilarious.

The difference is when you're using natural pesticides (sulphur, copper, etc) you can only use so much before it becomes detrimental. When you create glyphosate resistant plants, it encourages you to dose the shit out of plants and use a higher amount of pesticide.
