Ultra rare batten disease hits all three siblings and they think its just odds. Dont they realize there is causation here and all three have something that predisposed them and its an opportunity to find what is the cause and maybe fix it

The cause of the condition is known. It's a recessive genetic disorders. The sisters both have it because they have the same parents, both of whom are heterozygous carriers. No, mystery, just unlucky. The other kid, though, is a half-brother. He doesn't share the same mum, and yet it turns out he's also homozygous for this rare allele.

Sorry, anon. I made the error of assuming you had a least a high school level understanding of the topic you're ranting about.
Boys and girls all have two copies of each gene. One is inherited from mummy, and one from daddy. In this case, mummy and daddy both have a broken copy of one gene; but they're okay, because only one of their two copies is broken. One working copy is mostly enough.
These girls, though, have two broken copies. One broken copy from mummy and one broken copy from daddy. So they're fucked.
Their son has a different mummy, so they thought he'd be fine. But when they went to get him tested, it turned out that - oh no! - he has two broken copies of the gene too! The one he got from daddy is broken, but so is the one he got from the other mummy!
