The idea is that most people (nearly everyone) don't see themselves accurately; they tend to characterize themselves as the opposite of what they are. In theory, at least.
It's one of those things in which enough theory has been crafted, and now somehow enough data needs to be collected, but seeing as how most people would most likely study something more serious, I'm not sure if that will come to be.
