The box isn't open in the original image. The top of the box means C is closer than B, because its shifted back towards A.
If we leave A, B and C in the same spot in this picture, but close the box C is now outside the box.
Not to mention, the bug is going around the cube, so B is furthest by being on the exact opposite edge from A. If its going around, moving the point means its longer one way around, but shorter the other.
