because current as the transport of positive charge is the obvious definition to pick. however, we went into this assuming that positive charges move, when in reality, they don't (because nuclei are very heavy and don't simply wiz around like electrons). Only electrons move.
It turns out that this doesn't actually matter at all, since it's like a double-negative. Don't worry about it, it's just a historical oddity.

chemist routinely have to deal with both positive and negative conduction species simultaneously in electrochemistry.
holes, which are quasiparticles, are also important to track in semiconductor design because they effectively are a positive species of current
