is autonomous driving going to happen in our lifetime? not the meme stuff that requires the driver to take over at a second's notice, but genuine autonomy

Maybe in an extremely geofenced area, like a subway station. The only ones close to ai driving seems to be Tesla atm, and theirs require driver intervention for failsafe.

Yes if elon musk gets his way and we have underground or sky routes/tunnels for traffic, then you don't have to worry about all the problems of open air AI driving with shit running in the road or other chaotic variables.

Driving is an input output system. You need a stereoscopic vision system, literally just cameras placed in pairs around the auto, those input to a model, that model is then fed with the same shit fed to fucking Mario Cart A.I. (gross simplification, but you know) this isn't brains science.

problem with autonomous driving that will slow it down is it will have to be shown to be infinitely safer than human driving before it's widely implemented and accepted. About 100 Americans die a day driving yet most of you probably know about the tesla geek that got btfo while he was watching harry potter or some shit and that was a single incident like 4 years ago or something. A single catastrophic incident like a family of 5 in some suv getting permabanned from reality in it's early stages would be disasterous, even though something like that happens everyday and never makes beyond local news with human driving

That's mostly true, cars are very inefficient in cities, and desu you might as well just pay a cab driver.
The biggest usecase for autonomous driving would probably be preventing drunk driving accidents in the countryside.
