Why don't water companies just use powerful UV light sources to sterilize drinking water instead of adding chlorine?

Most if not all states require a residual for disinfection, something you can test down system to make sure nothings growing in the water bacteria wise. My understanding of UV is that it only neuters bacteria. I might be wrong on that part, the big reason is it's a lot more expensive to use UV on a large scale. I was offered a job at a place that used UV and it was capped at like 10 MGD. I opted not to because I was more interested in RO plants.

T. Water treatment anon, I'm open to more questions on this if anyone is interested.

This isn't true. See my prior post, I know of multiple city plants that use UV. They are mostly smaller plants though.

The majority of lead pipes arent actually municipal, they're what connects from the meter to the building which is a home owner responsibility. Hence the phrasing from a main line to a buildings plumbing. Not saying that there aren't municipal lead pipes but that infograph is misleading.

It is more expensive but where I'm at there's a unique problem that only high level filtration such as RO can fix. Someone else in the area is trying GAC which seems to work as well. Comparing traditional treatment methods tho UV isn't as economical and doesn't particularly provide any specialized treatment advantages.

Btw if you need a fence and you pay someone to build that shit, you are a giga cuck. It costs literally thousands of dollar, when even full blown soi bois can build their own fence. It's easy as shit, and it only takes maybe a few hour to do even without experience. If you're really lazy, home depot sell picket fences that are already put together, all you have to do is dig the holes and pour the cement.

They add chlorine so that bacteria don't grow inside the pipes for whatever reason. They do use UV lights, it is cheap and effective.

It is adopted for municipal water all over the world. However if it is well water then it would be a waste of money because there is no bacteria to kill that far down which would affect humans. But if the municipality use surface water then they use this among other things.

It isnt as perfectly sealed as you think, it isn't a oil pipeline and the pressure varies a lot. And bacteria can get into all sorts of places and all sorts of things can go wrong.

Redundancy is smart thing to do.

Depends on how much chlorine they put in. It they put an unhealthy amount so that for example it is 99% chlorine then it will kill pretty much anything. I noticed that there is a big difference in the amount people have in different countries. The Japanese love lots of chlorine for example.

AFAIU, water treatment plants also have other treatments, but they remove any potential contaminants except chlorine

Typically they use some sort of disinfecting method at the source, but the chlorine is added for the journey to your home. So they'll add an amount dependent on how far it has to go from the source.
Just let your water sit for a bit and it'll be fine. Chloramine is a different story though. For that you'll have to add something to neutralize it since letting it sit doesn't get rid of it all.

If you have distilled water then it's fine, it will be pure. I think you mean baceterial growth. Depends on how sealed it is and how clean the jug was to begin with.
Consider adding minerals to it before drinking though.

Two ways usually. The water isn't typically distilled at the source, so some bacteria will survive which can later grow. Bacteria introduced from the pipes themselves is far more likely in your home than along the way, however.
You can actually measure your water for bacteria counts and even chlorinated tap water will have some. You can try it with a test kit.

Because chlorinated water remains sterile and will even sterilize small leaks of dirty water (more common than you might think) that would otherwise cause health issues on the whole pipeline.
Once UV sterilization is done, nothing stops bacteria from growing inside the pipes.

to be fair lead and its salts are very insoluble and hard to absorb. still any amount of lead prolonged exposure could slightly reduce intelligence. just minimize it as much as possible. it's more of a population health, performance and wellbeing problem rather than individual issue

How much it costs to build the infrastructure for producing and distributing water? Like all the water pumps, placing all the pipes, the wells, the purification plants, etc? Lets say the US average. What is the value of all this infrastructure and the cost year to year of maintenance and depreciation and labor, and how much water is provided by the system.
Im trying to get a rough mental model of the economics of the water industry.

Depends on a lot of things. The differences in elevation makes the pumps necessary vary. Also the ground and climate has a lot to say when it comes to how much it cost to dig pipes and how deep the pipes need to be. Also the ground might move and even crack some pipes so maintainance might vary a lot.

But in general it is one of the most expensive types of infrastructure we have.

I never thought about anything that ridiculous and now I wonder if it is possible. I don't work for a municipality so I don't know if anyone thought of that before. But it sounds like it would potentially cause a mess. They would know SOMETHING is going on straight away due to the difference in pressure tho.

Erosion and just rocks and dirt moving around is a reason for extra maintainance. And it varies hugely from place to place. One thing that is not exactly great for America is all your sprawling suburbs. Maintaining water infrastructure for that probably cost $100k-500k per household due to the large distances. It is usually paid with taxes by people who live in inner cities and so on.

Doesn't seem like the politicians cared much about that when they built it. It is a lot more cost effective inside cities.
