HOWEVER, moneylending was also illegal for Christians to practice, but taxes and other financial systems are what made large kingdoms and societies work. Without some form of income through taxation and lending kings would go bankrupt, so the Jews were kept around (see court Jews) and protected by kings to do the financial dirty work. Over time essentially the populace got mad, as pogroms weren't working, so kings shoved all the Jews into ghettos. Within these ghettos they were forced to pay exhorbitantly high rental fees every month or else they would get kicked into the wild, or they could convert to christianity and move out, then eventually becoming integrated and normal. So, over time these rental costs were so high that only Jews making large enough amounts of money could stay in the ghettos, as they weren't allowed to farm either, so they had to be managers, moneylenders, ect. and be good enough at those jobs to stay in the religion. Essentially over time they became so good at white collar work that they depressed the economy of wherever they went, people racked up massive amounts of debt which led to more pogroms against them and more expulsions.
For this reason they were a huge pain in the ass to deal with for medieval and beyond peoples, so they were just legally forbidden to enter most western Euro countries, hence why they're associated with Eastern European culture because of higher religious tolerance. But make no mistake, they originated in west Europe.
