Has to do with stimulation of neural pathways associated with imagination and hyperactivity. Dopamine and L-Dopa, in general are responsible for like 40% of higher order cognition and motor control. As to why it causes psychosis, It doesn't really matter. If it isn't dopamine, it would be a different neurotransmitter. There are thousands of things that can go wrong with too much or too little of any of the compounds swimming around in your brains.
