Imagine if pic related was actually a perfectly flexible string, with mass, lying flat on a frictionless shelf, with a tiny bit hanging over the edge (no weights or pulleys). Would the string fall off the ledge? I'm thinking it would because along all the string, except past the ledge, the forces are balanced, where past the ledge there is only force down. So this tiny force will pull the string down.
