Everyone talks about the importance of digital privacy, but is there any debate or discussion about biological privacy. What could companies like 23andme do with our genomic data? In your opinion, is there any reason for concern?

We used to discuss this on /cyb/ back in the day. Essentially, DNA is data and involves enormous amounts of privacy issues. An insurance company will find this of great value as it can eliminate customers that are at higher risks. They can save a fortune this way.

There are lots of debates of it. 23andme's business strategy is not to make money based on the tests they sell, this is not a sustainable business strategy. They're looking to leverage the huge quantities of genetic data they've collected.

Missasssumptions about datasets, which are like racism, but reinvented.

Like you ware poor and genes cause nobody gave you houses to rent while you ware young.

Genetics is more like possibilities, the aspect that they are restriced, sometimes because people are so kind they get abused, or because there are chemical superweapons outthere...

(somebody puts you up some chem on job interview and you're unemployable for rest of your life)

In this big data world,...

Family food caused bad liver enzymes. Traditions.

Things like that.

Maybe with different food they are stronger.

But just another option to abuse and harm out of optimization.

One of the main things I hear about is that insurance companies could get access to your DNA and raise your rates or deny you coverage based on you having a higher risk than the general public for certain medical conditions. That might be possible for high value life insurance policies but for medical coverage, almost everyone who has insurance in the US is on a group policy, so your coverage cannot be denied.
