if one was to be retarded, leaving it undefined, like our forefathers assumed with negative square roots, would be the end of it. however, we have time on our side and know now that complex numbers are a thing, and a rather valid thing at that.
dividing by zero, and getting something reasonable if not out there, would solve how much energy is actually present in objects moving at the speed of light, i think. It would also act as a stepping stone towards unknown mathematics, but we need to take that first step.
lets start from 1, and go from there. 1/0 is the same as saying, "divide one cookie amongst 0 people", and while there is no easy answer, what I propose is that 1/0=1. sure, nobody eats it, but it is still there, because we said it was real in our expression. nobody gets 1 cookie.
this can be generalized to x/0=x, with the same premise. nothing gets x zeroths of x.
