Ok help me understand this. Why is it called midnight, when it's not actually the middle of the night?

There are 12 hours at night. How can something with 12 units have a middle?

Unless of course, midnight is not the entire hour, but just the minute of 0:00 and in that case, how can 720 minutes have a middle minute?
