The bad ones are. Some time ago physicists started confusing cause and effect. They observed a phenomenon, made a mathematical description of it and dubbed that description a cause. But that's merely heuristics. Physics is called physics for a reason. The field is meant to be physical with clear causes and mechanics that explain phenomenon. Unfortunately the math department took over and convinced the physicists that descriptions, heuristics, predictions and models are enough. So physicists stopped pursuing explanations and causes. Physics became non-physical.

I tend towards structuralism: that we don't need laws to operate on objects, but that relations between points is all that exists. The only "laws" that exist are the topological parameters of the embedding space.
A dichotomy is unnecessary.
