Furthermore the quality of the community has severely weakened by the massive influx of graduates with qualifications which would have been considered little more than trade school certificates half a century ago, or relatively equivalent to the finishing schools of the Victorian era. Many of the scientists today choose their profession as a career option rather than the pursuit of knowledge and discovery. They are not interested in the scientific method, many dont even know what that means, they are interested in the salary brackets, the social position, and the power which some positions can be used to pursue their own non-scientific goals, which many ruthlessly exploit.
A return to the scientific standards of the early 20th century will not be reattained until civilization undergoes a traumatic event, perhaps an economic or environmental collapse, a severe plague or a J curve caused by some other factor. Only when society reaches a point where these parasites and pretenders can no longer be supported will real science reemerge.
