If we lived in an area with only tall trees and couldn't get food any other way, our necks would grow overtime, this is what happened to the giraffes for example. Well it's more complicated than that, but that's the basic idea.
That if you look at it from another point of view, timewise, if you slow down your perspective and you zoom out on the scale of time, then you'll see animals are shifted in growth towards their surroundings and environment etc.
Schizophrenia is what happens when somebody gets abused a lot and their brain stops functioning the way it was supposed to function due to the brain's natural design being smashed around by all the abuse.
If however there was an environment when the factors that cause schizophrenia were very common and it was forcing everybody to become a schizo and they were dying because of it, then people would need to adapt and then they would change, and evolve to better survive with schizophrenia, or to avoid getting it altogether. Since it's not impeding our reproduction, it's not being filtered out.
