Jim Simmons who started the most successful quant fund of all time basically shaped the industry and his practice was "get as many smart people in a room as you can". They take Math and Physics phds not for their in depth knowledge but because their brains have been trained for years to think in an abstract quantitative way.
To understand quant trading you need to know:
