The vast, VAST majority of "engineering" doesn't actually solve the problem it sets out to solve. Instead it's solving problems that shouldn't exist in the first place, created by other engineers, and creating new problems for future engineers in the process. Is society really better off, happier, cleaner, whatever, than it was 10 years ago, or 20 years ago? Look at computing, you've got layers upon layers upon layers of abstraction to the point where it's basically a religion. You've got some "mysteries" behind the doors, and on top of them you add rules of "best practice" tantamount of mantras, rituals that don't actually solve any real world problems outside computing. Did more transistors really make programs more efficient, faster, better able to solve the fucking problem? No. It just added MORE SHIT on top of OTHER SHIT. Rinse and repeat in virtually every sub-field, where 99% of engineers don't know how the systems they work on actually work, or why they are doing what they are doing; just click run on the CFD thing lmao; just google Building Code number fuckyou lmao.
