For a long time, string theory and holographic(flat universe with projection) universe was considered realm of pure speculative theories ones which have uses in explaining how quantum gravity works. AdS/CFT bridges string theory into regular physics theory of elemental particles/quantum field theories ala the standard model physics. The implication being our universe is very well a flat universe. Its a really exciting thing for physics field because such a thing doesn't happen often. Our physics had largely been settled for nearly 100 years. This maybe the next clue (not necessarily a smoking gun) or a hint for the next step in physics.
