Virgin's Launcher One is a different spacecraft that uses the same approach to space launch.

Because Starship's danger radius (or whatever the actual term for it was on the map) from sound is twice as large as the Saturn V's. They'd have to evacuate an absolute fuckton of people just for a launch that they could do in Boca Chica for far less effort or from a platform at sea for minimal effort.

South Padre Island is literally half the distance to the Boca Chica launch pad as Titusville is from LC-39A, and despite the greater thrust, Starship should be quieter than a Saturn V.

It's all about cadence. A 747 can be anywhere on the planet in two days, and can mate a payload and launch in a matter of hours. That gives these countries the ability to put a smallsat in any inclination on three days' notice. There are plenty of military applications for that.

I assume re-compressing the methane and oxygen would take non-trivial amounts of time and energy, in which case you'd need tanks full of methane and LOX near your launch site again (which is what you're trying to avoid with pipelines), not to mention power and more equipment.

I imagine it's similar at least to mountain cave formation where as a result of plate tectonics connecting they push in a given area and the tension over time extrudes a mountain. I assume as it cools, that stuff turns to volcanic rock. If you assume a cooling on a global scale, the magma recedes leaving behind more crust and larger pockets of caves. Though idk about the larger pocket of caves part. I think you could sell people on massive cave habitation. Less on live in a pod in arizona kinda thing.

Question is, how efficient would that be? Assuming every launch platform should support 1 launch a day (probably more, according to Musk), it will need to produce a few thousands tons of liquid CH4 daily. They'll need many fuel production sites for every platform to keep up with launches. Although once they get that running, they'll have almost free fuel, also bonus points for becoming carbon-neutral.

I think at some point he's gonna invest some money in this tech, maybe when Starship is flying, Starlink constellation is complete, and Mars colony is already under construction. Fusion is not just free energy, it can also be used for very efficient rocket engines. Fusion engine on Starship could increase payload capacity, reduce travel time, and most importantly, remove necessity of refueling in orbit. Instead of launching a dozen or so Starships to refuel only one for Mars trip, he could send them all straight to Mars.

Maybe Elon is waiting for the technology to be developed by other companies and institutes, so he can invest in the most promising design.

The smallest one currently under development is 200 tons. Typical floating reactors are ~2000 tons each.

Converting energy from solar to electricity, then from electricity to chemicals, then from chemicals back to electric is very wasteful, especially when you can just power everything directly from solar (or nuclear/fusion), and store energy in batteries more efficiently. ISRU methane will only be used as rocket fuel, until some next gen fusion or nuclear engines come up.

Except that the bottleneck on Mars is mass and human endeavor, not conversion efficiency. There will be batteries for daily operations but taking enough batteries for, say, a two month blackout is prohibitive compared to fuel due to the relative wh/kg.
