Anyone that studies even the basic of the space race, comes pretty fast to the realisation that the scientific advancements we've made in just those 10 years are nothing short of amazing
They were HUGE, and in so many areas, from enginering to medicine
So big in fact, that all the tech of the following 50 years is nothing more than just a more fancy version of what the space program achieved
What was a waste, was the termination of such endeavors
On one hand it's understandable why the US population wanted the goverment to spend all that money on things that "mattered" for the population (schools, hospitals, infrastructures, etc...)
But on the other hand, completly shutting down such operations is very sad loss, as the probability of another such project is low given the socio-political climate
What the US goverment should've done instead was simply lower NASA budget and given them a long term goa - like a trip to Mars
