Correct my steam-loco cylinder-size wrongthink

The cylinder/piston assemblies on steam locomotives seem so small compared to the monumental size and weight of what they're pulling, it just seems wrong, and yet ... obviously it worked very well.

What am I getting wrong in my mindlet? I don't have this problem with imagining any other internal comb. engine or turbine performing its function, just the steam loco. Help me get the feel of this situation.
