consciousness, so far as i can tell, is an error checking mechanism. You see a thing you need to do, for example tie down a tarp that looks loose and is blowing in the wind. You see this and realize you need to do it, but then your error checking mechanism kicks in and says "i need to tie that tarp down". This lets you use the tool of language to ensure the thought you just had is actually sensible, and primes your brain by referencing concepts and objects which are not actually currently in your field of view (the concept of 'tie it down' is absent in the actual visual image you see), which conjures up abstract things allowing you to rapidly leap to answering questions about how you will go about doing what you just realized you need to do.
