The good money is in specialization. Don't become a generic frontend javascript monkey. You have specialized knowledge about civil engineering that the average boot camper has no clue about. Write software for the civil engineering market where only other CivEng programmers can compete with you.

This is kind of wrong, the good money is in getting competitive jobs at general tech employers not highly specialized niche hardtech engineering software companies. I bet the company behind autocad or something doesn't even pay that competitively.

And you're wrong that you would need a civil engineering background to work on software for that industry, you just need to ship code that works to spec, you won't be some one man software savant who works on everything from the basic business ideas to implementation. If you can write code you can write code for the civil engineering market
