I am trying to explain the present state of the world around me and in particular politics. I believe that political movements today are joined by the same psychological process that once governed religious conversion. I was set on this path when I noticed the various movements when talking about themselves often used similar language. We are ‘woke’; we are ‘awakened’; we took the ‘red pill’; we found the ‘They Live glasses’. Such language is also common in historical accounts of religious movements, for example the ‘Great Awakenings’ of the Methodists. Pic related, which I found on Google, neatly illustrates the stages.
Stage 1.
>I was asleep; I didn’t know.
Stage 2.
>An emotional shock. Perhaps romantic, perhaps in my social group, someone said something shocking. Or maybe I discovered a shocking fact online.
Stages 3,4
>That really stuck with me. As I process the implications, I am overcome with negative emotion: guilt, or anger. How has this been going on behind my back? Is it my fault?
Stage 5.
>This is wrong. This has to stop. I need to fix myself and others.
Stage 6.
>I am awakened.
Although pic related was designed by Qboomers, the pattern applies equally well to, for example, the pro-LGBT movement.
>Stage 2. “Gee, Anon… I didn’t think you were so nasty and homophobic but now I see you are. Your lies and denial will get you nowhere; this friendship is over.”
Anyway, I’m developing this theory myself, but I’m sure I’m not the first one to have this idea. Are any psychology anons able to help me either to perfect this theory, or to point me to an existing version? I am not a psychologist myself.
