If Pokemon starter cards have a 5% likelihood of containing a Pikachu, how does one calculate their likelihood of obtaining a Pikachu after opening five starter packs? How about twenty?

To get the likelihood of getting at least 1 pikachu, you have to calculate the likelihood of *not* getting a pikachu, and then invert it (reason being that otherwise you would have to do separate calculations for 1, 2, 3.... pikachus). Likelihood of not getting pikachu once is 0.95, likelihood of not getting it n times in a row is 0.95^n. You can do the rest.

Forgot to add, as the final step you have to do 1 - (likelihood of not getting it), i.e. in total it becomes 1 - (1 - 0.05)^n
Also you should've posted this in the stupid questions thread probably as it's a very basic statistics question.

Excellent. Thanks a lot. My intuition was just to add the likelihoods, and that would of course lead to percentages of 100% and beyond. A stupid high school teacher probably told me to do so in the past.

A decent chunk of college math is just a refresher course for shit you forgot you already learned in high school. If american high schools don't teach basic probability, then I am very concerned.
