Enlighten me on speed reading. I used to read thru 400 page complex books in a day, but modern entertainment got to me and I might as well be a slowpoke brainlet now.

It makes sense to me. Speedreading basically doubles your reading speed (if not more than that), but I doubt there are many people who can process information at twice the normal speed. There's variations obviously, but I would expect them to be small (i.e. Gaussian distribution).
So speedreading is possible, but you skip a lot of information.

because people, particularly on a board like /sci/, want to read and comprehend info-dense material with pen and paper at hand, not just Dan Brown books and Cosmo articles. and when they do read Dan Brown books and Cosmo articles, they don't really care whether they get through them twice as fast.

Get yourself the Speed Reading app on Google Play and do both courses. Follow the instructions and you can't fuck up, if it says you are supposed to stare at the Green Circle for 30mins 2 times a day (after waking up and before sleep), then fucking stare at it. Finishing both courses will take you a shit ton of time (how much depends on how consistent you are) but you will have that juicy 1000+ wpm. After you are done, you still have to maintain it - you have to speed read everything, otherwise you will lose progress.

Both higher playback and speed reading have no negative effects on your understanding if you do this at the speed appropriate for you which you can improve. However, it caps at some point. I haven't reached the cap for speed reading but for playback it's very hard to understand voice beyond 6x (I reached 8x with the Australian accent - Version2LP's Let's Play of Danganronpa) which makes it very exhausting. I no longer watch anything at a higher play back than 6x because after an hour of 6x+ you feel exhausted (I don't think you can improve it).
Common misunderstanding is that your brain 'skips' information but in reality it simplifies it. For example you can understand that some name refers to some person, but you don't actually know what person's name is.

Yeah, it's pretty odd that so many people have a fetish with subvocalizing and inner monologue. Both are tools and you should use them both. For example, I use subvocalizing when I don't understand something, and inner monologue when I'm thinking of something with regards to talking (what I could say to some person, &c). Many people use inner monologue for deciding on some issues, but I find visualization to be more efficient. Cool thing about visualization is that you get a clearer picture than if you would decide by inner monologue, although it takes years to develop for something. For example, using visualization to decide on stuff is especially hard, but after you learn it you have something that could be mistaken for photographic memory. It's not photographic memory because for it to work you need a spiderweb of references (building of which takes time since you need to read the relevant books & 'consume' them)

My gf is butthurt about this, even though I only watch my own stuff at 2x speed. After a few minutes you dont notice its sped up and it takes up less of your time. Its not like most shows are that deep or l the acting is so great you miss out on anything. Why do people act like its such a horrible thing? Am I autistic?

I might also be a brainlet but how do you increase your speed reading? At some point you can read faster than you can process it, but surely you can improve that to a degree.

Even if the acting is deep or whatever, you still don't miss out on anything BUT music. Shitty music become even more shitty (sad songs turns happy, even motivational - see Blue Bird Lamentation). I haven't reached a limit in speed reading as I've said. As I had said, your processing speed doesn't improve. What happens is that your brain simplifies things (for example you will never remember a character's name, because your brain never tried to remember it - only that the name references that character). If something is already in its most basic and pure form (e.g. math), speed reading doesn't work.
