I heard a firsthand account from someone who was in the warehouse where they were keeping their "idea" it was just a gigantic capacitor, rolled up from about the size of a football field.
Allegeldy, lightning struck it before they were "ready" "ready" and it blew a hole in the 30~ foot tall capacitor, about the size of a beach ball.
GE shelved the idea after that, it didn't seem feasible anymore. Probably still technically possible, but definitely not financially worth it to them.
