If it was as simple as chemical imbalances, wouldn't the prevalence of drug side effects guarantee some sort of mental illness? My primary guess is the Jungian or Freudian side with it being some sort of internal conflict or issue. That's not to say chemical imbalance doesn't play a role though.

Schizophrenia is generally understood as an imbalance in the brains attention system, at least neurophysiologically (specifically the dopaminergic system). Not that lifestyle doesn't influence it at all. Smokers (of anything) tend to be more susceptible to becoming schizos on average.
