I understand code; I know some C (and obviously python as well), the basics of manual memory management (using malloc, the stack, the heap); I get what a processor is and what memory is, and what algorithms are about (time and space complexity). I probably know more than the average scientist about this crap.
And that is how I know that a lot of it is just one giant meme. For many people, it is not worth it to learn about this stuff. Theres higher ROI stuff you can do (beginning with actually learning about your area of expertise).
