Research Inspiration

Do you ever read Sci-Fi novels to get ideas for your research? Or watch some movies or whatever. Is it a logical action to dedicate time to reading Heinlein, Asimov and the such, see what they tackled and try to bring it to fruition, or is it a lost cause and you’re better off just working at the lab? I’ve always heard that SF was a good source of inspiration for STEMfags, as it provided some fantastical concepts brought down to a more realistic space. Is this all just nonsense and it’s ultimately time spent on mere entertainment? Do any of you do such a thing? How do you decide what to research?
